Factors contributing to this include biological, psychological, and social pressures such as experiencing abuse, poverty, and unrealistic expectations from roles like caregiving and social media. Rates of self-harm and eating disorders are also disproportionately higher in women, particularly young women.
Abuse and trauma: There is a strong link between mental health problems and experiences of abuse. Many women with mental health issues have a history of abuse, and those who have experienced extensive physical and sexual violence have higher rates of PTSD, suicide attempts, and self-harm.
Social psychological pressures: Unrealistic beauty standards and the constant comparison on social media can negatively impact body image and self-esteem. The pressure to juggle multiple roles, such as career and caregiving, can also contribute to poor mental health.
Biological and hormonal factors: Hormonal changes related to reproductive health, such as the menopause, can impact mental health and may worsen conditions like bipolar disorder.
